Recording Your Night

Where should I put my phone?

On your nightstand, within about an arm's length of your head, with the bottom of the phone (where the microphone is) facing you. Don't put it under a pillow or in a drawer, since that muffles the sound.

Can I lock my phone while it records?

Yes. A few seconds after you start, the app checks that the microphone is picking up sound and shows "Safe to lock your phone." From then on it keeps recording in the background, even if you lock the phone or switch apps.

Does my phone need to be plugged in?

It's a good idea. A full night of recording uses a fair amount of battery. If you start with less than 30% and the phone isn't charging, the app suggests plugging it in. If the battery drops to 5% while recording, the app stops and saves your night, so you don't lose it when the phone runs out.

A call or Siri stopped my recording. What happened?

Calls and Siri take over the microphone, so the recording pauses. Nothing recorded before that is lost. iOS doesn't let an app turn the microphone back on while the phone is locked, so Snore Signals sends a silent "Recording paused" notification. Tap it, or open the app, within 30 minutes and recording carries on in the same night. After 30 minutes, your night is saved up to the pause.

To avoid interruptions, turn on Sleep Focus in Control Center before bed, and turn off Allow Siri When Locked in Settings › Siri. System alerts, like the low-battery warning, don't interrupt recordings.

Can I record a nap?

Yes. Start a recording whenever you lie down. Each recording is labeled by when it started, Morning, Afternoon or Night, so a nap doesn't get mixed up with the night before. Trends weighs each recording by how long it was, so a short nap doesn't count as much as a full night.

Can it remind me to record?

Yes. Go to Settings › Notifications and turn on Bedtime reminder, then pick a time. It's one local notification a day, and nothing else is sent.

Can I start and stop from my Apple Watch?

Yes, with the Snore Signals Watch app (part of Pro). Open Snore Signals on your iPhone first, then tap Start on the Watch. iOS only lets an app start the microphone while it's open, so a start from the Watch fails if the iPhone app is closed. Once recording, you can lock your iPhone and stop from your wrist in the morning. The Watch shows the recording time and whether it's healthy.

It says "Recording didn't start."

The microphone didn't start, so nothing was recorded. The most common reason is starting from the Apple Watch while Snore Signals isn't open on your iPhone: iOS only lets an app start using the microphone while it's open. Open the app on your iPhone and start again. If it keeps happening, check that Snore Signals is allowed in Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone.

How much storage does a night take?

About 30 MB per hour of recording, so roughly 200–250 MB for a full night. To save space, a night's audio is kept for 30 days so you can play it back, then deleted. Its events, summary and trends stay. To keep audio for 7 or 90 days instead, go to Settings › Storage and change Keep recordings. Storage also shows how much space your recordings use.

Can I delete a single night?

Yes. Open the night in the Timeline, tap ⋯ at the top right, and choose Delete Night. To free up space but keep the results, choose Remove Audio, Keep Results instead. With Pro, you can also press and hold a night in Trends' history to delete it. To erase everything, use Delete All My Data (see below).

Your Results

How does it find snoring?

After you stop, your iPhone runs Apple's built-in sound classifier over the recording, a few seconds at a time, and marks the stretches it's confident are snoring. It all happens on your phone, usually in about a minute. Nothing is uploaded.

What does the percentage on each event mean?

It's how confident the app is that the sound was snoring. 80% and up is almost certainly snoring. Events closer to 50% are worth a listen: they might be heavy breathing, a partner, a fan, or the TV.

An event isn't snoring. Can I fix it?

Yes. On the Timeline, tap an event to hear it, then use its ⋯ menu to relabel it as Talking, Cough or Other, or remove it as "Not a sound." Your snoring percentage and counts update straight away.

Why can't I play back an older night?

To save space, a night's audio is kept for 30 days and then deleted, while its events, summary, waveform and trends stay. The Timeline says so when a night's audio is gone. To keep audio longer, set Keep recordings to 90 days in Settings › Storage.

How accurate are the decibel readings?

They're estimates. An iPhone microphone isn't calibrated like a sound meter, and the reading depends on the phone and how far it is from you. They're most useful for comparing your own nights, with the phone in the same spot each time.

I know I snored, but it found nothing.

Check that the phone was close and not covered. If the Record screen says "Finding snore events…", the app is still analyzing that night; give it a minute with the app open. If a night really was missed, email us and we'll take a look.

Why don't I see my heart rate?

Heart rate comes from Apple Health, so you'll need an Apple Watch on your wrist that night. On the Timeline, tap Show heart rate and allow access. With the Snore Signals Watch app (part of Pro), the Watch measures your heart rate every few seconds while you record, instead of every few minutes. If you turned access off, turn it back on in the Health app: tap your profile picture, then Apps › Snore Signals.

Stay Awake

What is Stay Awake?

An option for when you're trying not to fall asleep, like on the couch or at your desk. On the Record screen, turn on Nudge me if I doze off and start a recording. If Snore Signals hears you start snoring, it nudges you until you tap I'm awake: a tap on your wrist, a vibration on your iPhone, and a chime that gets a little louder every 10 seconds. Choose which of those you want with the Watch, Vibrate and Sound buttons. After you tap I'm awake, it waits a minute before listening again.

Which microphone does it listen with?

With the Snore Signals Watch app (part of Pro) and the Watch option on, your Apple Watch listens with its own microphone. It's on your wrist, closer to you, so it works even with your iPhone in a pocket or bag. Nothing is recorded or saved on the Watch. Without a Watch, your iPhone's microphone listens. Either way, your iPhone records the session as usual.

It didn't nudge me.

Stay Awake waits for the steady rhythm of snoring, a few breaths in a row, so a single snort or a cough won't set it off. It usually notices within about 20 seconds of steady snoring. If you rely on your iPhone's microphone, keep the phone close and uncovered. The Watch option is greyed out if no Apple Watch is paired, the Watch app isn't installed, or you don't have Pro.

Can I use it to stay awake while driving?

No. Stay Awake is a convenience, not a safety device, and it can't reliably tell when you're drowsy. Never rely on it while driving or doing anything dangerous. If you're sleepy, pull over and rest.

Snore Signals Pro

What does Pro include?

Trends (snoring night over night and week over week), remedy insights (how much you snored on nights you tried something versus nights you didn't), exporting your nights to a spreadsheet, and the Apple Watch app, including Stay Awake nudges on your wrist. Recording, analysis, the Timeline, nightly summaries and Stay Awake on your iPhone are free.

Is it a subscription?

You choose. Pro is available as a monthly subscription or as a one-time purchase with no recurring charge. No account is needed either way.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple. On your iPhone, go to Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions › Snore Signals. Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date to avoid being charged for the next month.

I reinstalled the app or got a new phone. Do I have to pay again?

No. Open the Pro screen and tap Restore purchase. It recognizes purchases already tied to your Apple ID at no extra cost.

How do I get a refund?

Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds are too. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can't issue refunds directly.

Privacy and Your Data

Are my recordings uploaded anywhere?

No. Recordings, detected snoring, and your notes stay on your iPhone. With Stay Awake on the Watch, the Watch listens but never records or saves anything. There's no account and no server. See the Privacy Policy for the full detail.

How do I delete everything?

In the app, go to Settings › Privacy › Delete All My Data. It erases every recording and night the app has stored. Deleting the app does the same. To delete just one night, see "Can I delete a single night?" above.

Is Snore Signals a medical device?

No. It shows what was recorded, but it doesn't diagnose or rule out anything, including sleep apnea. If you're concerned about your sleep or breathing, please see a doctor.
